There are three options for your exam, well four, since you can opt to not take the exam and forfeit 20% of your grade. Which is essentially taking 20pts off your current avg...

You will choose one of the following for your exam:
1. Role play therapist writing activity. This option is in purple.
2. Social psych application. This option is in green.
3. A reflective writing that incorporates your thoughts on three units that we covered this year. This option is in red.
You will have an hour and a half of writing time during the exam period with your iPad for internet access. Please use your time wisely. You may start this assignment at home.

Option 1:
You will be given a case study for your exam, these are found Case Study Roles. This includes some key details about a client such as history, family, and their life goals. You are writing out the conversation you will have as their therapist, explaining how you came to a diagnosis, what their condition is, and forming a plan for them getting as healthy and living as full a life as possible.

As their therapist have the challenge of helping them to:

1. Determine what they are suffering from by figuring out their GAF GAF link score, if they need to be hospitalized or not, or if they just need therapy. And the DSM, to help you figure out what condition they have here is the full list of all mental illnesses link. 15%
2. Explain their diagnosis to them clearly and answer four questions that they have (which you make up) about their diagnosis. 55%
3. Use the internet to find resources that will help them to plan steps to reach their goals. 30% (you will have a specific location to work with or you can use Burlington, MA to find out what resources are around here)

Part 1: Determine what their issue(s) is/are. You will have a GAF (global assessment of functioning). Indicate on that form where you think they are. Then you need to write out how you are as their therapist will explain what is going on to them. You can write this in dialogue (or screenplay) form if you wish. You will be making up or fleshing out all kinds of details about your client in order to fully explain the situation. Be creative, but sensitive and above all accurate. 15 points.

Part 2: Full explanation of the diagnosis in clear language that is appropriate and understandable to your client.
Your client will ask four questions, you need to make them up:
-one about how the diagnosis was reached -explain how you used the DSM/GAF to diagnosed them with this condition.
-two about causality, if there is anything genetic or that they did to cause this condition depending upon the diagnosis there probably isn’t anything, but you need to explain this clearly. Please include any relevant brain information here: neurotransmitters, cancer, hormones, etc.
-three and four are questions that you create that the client might have asked that you then answer in detail. (You can think about our recent social psych discussions to help you with this.)

Part 3: You will be given a location in the US where your client lives or stick with Burlington, MA. Examine their life goals You could just randomly google, but I suggest going to NAMI click on your state and peruse the highly reputable resources that they have listed. If that doesn't work, then google away! Take all factors into consideration, if your client is a veteran, what Veterans Administration resources can you get for him or her? If your client is a child, what about the school, what can colleges or schools provide? Think creatively.

Option 2:
Using what we have learned about the brain and social psychology, propose a solution to a problem that you see around you in society. You can either submit a problem and your proposed solution or provide a solution and your rationale for why it will work to the problem below.

Example situation:
At the YMCA, there is a room for small children to play. The "mat room" has a floor of gymnastics mats and foam shapes for playing with. Currently there are no rules posted in the room. The problem is that parents are dropping off their children in the room and not supervising them, this is creating an unsafe situation. The Y is struggling to come up with rules and how to phrase the rules so that parents will adhere to them.

Using what you know about convincing people and your understanding of the human brain, what would you do to ensure that the mat room is a safe place. There is no money for anything but a sign or perhaps some paint for the wall.

Develop a plan for making the room a safe place for the community 50pts
Explain in detail why your plan will work according to your understanding of A. social psychology, B. learning, and C. the workings of the human brain 50pts.

Choose your own situation to tackle or the example above: Carts left out in the parking lot, the student parking lot, painting names on the graffiti rocks, how the line gets backed up in the caf, etc. the point breakdown is the same. Half your points are earned for a coherent and practical solution and half the points for the psychological reasoning why that is a good solution. Note that with all situations, the solution you propose can cost little to no money, but must be based upon social psych research (reciprocity, scarcity, authority, consistency, liking, consensus, groupthink, prejudice, etc). Please feel free to google research, but come up with your own solution and of course cite your sources.

Option 3:
This is your choice. You have studied the human brain (all the parts -3D brain ap), how it works (neurons), how it learns (learning style), sleep (sleep journal), drugs' impact on the brain, suicide risk factors, mental illnesses (personality disorders, mood disorders like depression, anxiety disorders), treatment/therapy (types of therapies and types of therapists), and social psychology (how people interact and how you can change their perceptions). Using a minimum of 3 of the units we explored, write a reflection piece that demonstrates your understanding of what we learned in the unit and how you are applying or are planning on applying it to your life.

Half of the points are earned for a thorough demonstration of understanding of the content we learned.
Half of the points are earned for a detailed explanation of how you are applying that knowledge.
